Solos Summer 2025 Day 73: A Day in Amsterdam- Canals, Pancakes, and a Max Verstappen Shopping Spree

Port stop number two on my Norwegian Prima adventure brought us to one of my favorite cities: Amsterdam. This Dutch capital is a perfect blend of old-world charm and modern energy — a place where 17th-century townhouses lean ever so slightly over canals, and bikes outnumber cars at least three to one. It’s the kind of city that draws you in slowly, until you find yourself falling hard for its artistic flair, laid-back lifestyle, and — of course — its irresistible food.

All Aboard the Canals

I started my day with a classic canal cruise, which really is the best way to begin any visit to Amsterdam. There’s something about seeing the city from the water that gives you a whole new appreciation for its unique geography and history. As we drifted along the canals — part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site — we passed under low-arched bridges, alongside crooked townhouses with ornate gables, and past cozy cafés already buzzing with locals and tourists alike.

Our guide pointed out key landmarks: the Anne Frank House, the striking Westerkerk bell tower, the Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge), and the historic Golden Bend of Herengracht, where the city’s wealthiest merchants once built their opulent canal homes.

Satay and City Streets

After the cruise, it was time for lunch, and I headed to Satay Club — a stylish Indonesian spot with cozy vibes and bold flavors. Indonesian cuisine is a huge part of Dutch culinary history, and this place nailed it. I ordered the chicken satay with peanut sauce and jasmine rice — tender, smoky, and just the right amount of spice. A perfect refuel before my afternoon of exploration.

DIY Walking Tour with a Little Help from ChatGPT

Armed with my phone and a custom walking route (thanks, ChatGPT!), I set off to explore Amsterdam on foot. The beauty of this city is that it’s endlessly walkable — you can go from buzzing shopping streets to tranquil canals in just a few blocks.

Some of my favorite stops included:

  • Dam Square: The historical heart of the city, home to the Royal Palace, Nieuwe Kerk, and lots of street performers and energy.

  • The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes): A charming neighborhood full of boutique shops, local cafés, and vintage stores — perfect for wandering.

  • Bloemenmarkt: The world’s only floating flower market, where the scent of tulips (even in August!) fills the air.

  • Museumplein: Although I didn’t go into any museums today, I walked past the famous Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Stedelijk Museum. This area is the city’s cultural hub and always buzzing with activity.

And then… the highlight for this Formula 1 fan:

Pit Stop at the Formula 1 Store

Of course, no Amsterdam trip would be complete without a stop at the Formula 1 store to stock up on some Max Verstappen gear! As the reigning Dutch hero, Max is everywhere in the Netherlands, and the store was packed with Red Bull Racing apparel, collectibles, and more. I may have gone a little overboard… but no regrets. I’m now fully outfitted to cheer him on for the rest of the season.

Pancakes, Please

Mid-walk, I made a very important second food stop for some classic Dutch pancakes — specifically the ham and cheese variety. These thin, crepe-like delights are savory perfection: crispy at the edges, soft in the middle, and loaded with melted goodness. Pro tip: always add a drizzle of syrup for that salty-sweet combo that just works.

Back to the Ship… Delayed, But Not Disappointed

I made it back to the Norwegian Prima in time to unwind in the thermal suite — one of my favorite features of the ship. The heated loungers, steam rooms, and ocean views are the ultimate post-exploration reward.

We were supposed to set sail in the early evening and pass through the largest locks in the world on our way out of Amsterdam — a scenic cruising moment I was really looking forward to. But high winds had other plans. Our departure was delayed until conditions improved.

Luckily, I’m on a floating resort.

I took the unexpected extra time to settle into the Whiskey Bar, where the bartenders know their stuff and the live music sets the perfect mood. With a glass of something smooth in hand and a warm glow from a day of good food and good walking, I leaned into the moment.

After all, if you’re going to be delayed, this is the way to do it. Cheers from Amsterdam — next stop, Norway!
